'The Sharp End':

Learning to Lead

Climbers who have been top-roping, following other leader climbers, or honing their technique in a gym may decide at some point they want to learn how to lead... Leading brings emotional rewards that are far greater than hanging from a top-rope, but it also raises your bet in a game with already high stakes.

Whether sport or traditional in discipline, we'll discuss different approaches for leading climbs including maintaining a straight rope line, tying knots, anchor selection, as well as, deciding when and where to place gear. You will have ample opportunity to do some practice leads (with a top rope backup) and have the instructor give you valuable feedback on your gear placements.

Along with the core skills of leading, you'll also learn the finer points such as route selection, rope management, protecting the second, interpreting the guidebook, and how to safely retreat.

Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.

We'd love to hear from you!
